“Our craft may be pretty to look at, but the intent of our work serves a higher purpose. We are strong advocates of preserving the world around us and sustaining our planet, and our art helps us fulfill this passion for nature. We design wreaths out of birdseed. Our hope is that someone will find our work to be beautiful and artistic, but the real purpose is to provide food for birds and other backyard critters. We have customers who preserve these wreaths in their homes, and as flattering as this may be, our goal is to add beauty to our back yards and feed the birds. Our wreaths are made entirely of birdseed that is a completely organic, edible food source for birds. Specifically, this is black oil sunflower seed, red and white millet, safflower and thistle seed. Our process is simple but lengthy for these products, taking as many as 5-7 days to complete one wreath. We have created molds that are part of our artistic expression and we fill them with a selection of seed that creates an image through layering, hand painting and curing. The seed is held together with a natural and nutritional binder that is made of such ingredients as honey, egg white, corn syrup and a few other edible treats. Those welcome guests to our products include almost ever bird you’ll see in your back yard – from the beautiful spring finches and wrens to the hearty woodpeckers, doves, cardinals, flickers and even red winged black birds. We also build birdhouses out of cedar. When the Indian corn comes in each fall, we cover the houses with corn and detail them out with moss that is grown and harvested in the woods around our farm. The effect is that of the very popular fairy houses. A birdhouse with this Indian corn has a dual purpose. We like to think if it as a ‘bed and breakfast’ for birds. The Indian corn is an excellent food source for larger birds (woodpeckers, blue jays, cardinals, etc.) during the winter months, and in the spring, once the moss and the cobs weather away, the house serves as a nesting box for the smaller song birds (tit mouse, wren, etc.) It is great fun to hear these song birds each spring as they nest in these cedar houses that will last many years. We’ve been in business for over 10 years and love what we do. We hope you and your birds will enjoy our art as much as we love creating it.~ John & Sally Wehrman”
